The N-Opportunity framework is a great trigger. You will grow your customer lifetime value (CLV), as the opportunities you build are linked to each other. Hence, they allow you to grow from the existing product / offering range that you are comfortable with. 

As a systems driven New Shaper, you create more depth and reach out to your customers through 2 new intertwined digital product-service-bundles that set you apart from others. You pursue the innovative process by reusing what has been driving your business so far. Your competences grow in the field of resilience enhanced product and service development and a streamlined, systematic go-to-market. Throughout the training, obstacles and risks help you strengthen your offering and be more responsive to clients that might consider changing over to the competition.

However, on your moves from the first product to the interlinked services, be aware of not becoming too technically focused and less customer centric while designing the opportunites. N-Opportunity designers could follow the teaming exercises that activate the cognitive capacity and out-of-the-box thinking. It is recommended to create an open environment with dedicated N-Opportunity sessions on a regular basis so that teams and engineers will experience a way to handle setbacks. Avoid isolated design and innovations rounds. Telling stories is an uncomfortable hurdle for engineering minded personnel and the open-up phase will ease this difficulty and improve visibility. N-Opportunity Type Examples

Creating a N-shaped offering is driven by your appetite for the NEW in a systematic manner. By leveraging a single product and expanding it into a digital NEW, you traverse obstacles, obstructions, and opportunities. That second offering derives from your resilience practices; this one is independent from the first offering.

Nvidia is a prime example of the N-shaped opportunity, keeping up with the market expansion for gaming, namely eSports, and smart mobility, namely autonomous and automated driving vehicles and goods. Nvidia’s key effort is to further expand its brand and get closer to communities to serve them first-hand with its own brand. In the beginning however, Nvidia started in 1993 with its vision to equip computers with a dedicated graphical processing unit (GPU) for the emerging gaming business and gaming enthusiasts. Competition crowded the markets. Nvidia outperformed the market by combining its graphic units with convincing innovative features such as more 3D graphics.

The key differentiator though was its decision to give programmers access to the GPU code directly. While others locked in the buyers and consumers, Nvidia invited the community in - from buyers to consumers, from co-developers to collaborators. Along the trajectory of expansion, Nvidia systematically moved into the heart of the gaming business - the digital movements in a nutshell - and turned its findings into other sectors. Nvidia utilized those and presented the physical-digital combos for visually enhanced physical movements, hence autonomous vehicles.
